Sanforizing (compressive shrinkage) is a finishing process that pre-shrinks fabric — mainly cotton and denim — before it's cut and sewn into garments. It stops the fabric from shrinking unpredictably after a customer washes it.
Fabric is dampened, then fed through a machine where a thick, endless sanforizing rubber belt presses it against a heated steam cylinder. As the belt travels from a curved section to a flat section, it physically contracts — and forces the fabric riding on it to contract with it. This compresses the weave and permanently "sets" the fabric's shorter length, so it won't shrink further later. A palmer cylinder then dries the fabric, locking in the new memory.
Both belts do the same job — compressive shrinkage — but are built for different machine types. A sanforizing belt runs on a sanforizer range, typically for wider woven fabric and denim lines. A comfit belt is fitted to comfit-style compacting machines, often with different roll dimensions and mounting. Which one you need depends entirely on your machine model.
This is why mills specify export-quality, thin-ply calendered rubber belts rather than generic rubber sheeting — the belt is the single component controlling shrink accuracy and appearance for every meter of fabric that runs through it.
